For my first trip out of the United States, I had the privilege of flying business class round-trip. While my last post discussed my personal experiences during my first international flights, this blog focuses more on the Swiss Air Business Class and the private lounges.

Pre-Flight Pampering at Lufthansa Lounge - Logan Airport (BOS)

Lufthansa Lounge at Logan Airport
Lufthansa Lounge - Logan

The Lufthansa Lounge in Boston was located in Terminal E on Level 4 and was the perfect place to relax before my flight. I arrived three hours early to fully enjoy the amenities. Upon entering, I was greeted by a friendly receptionist who asked for my boarding pass and quickly checked me in. The lounge featured a well-organized buffet with various gourmet options and an open bar. A center island with iced water and fresh lemon slices added a refreshing touch.

I tried a shaved radish salad with toasted almonds, a turkey banh mi baguette, spring meatballs with chimichurri, and some New England clam chowder. I also enjoyed a glass of Tisdale Pinot Noir.

One of my favorite parts was the boarding process. At 9:45 PM, boarding was announced, and we lined up in the lounge. From there, we took a private exit down some escalators, straight to the jet bridge, bypassing the usual airport chaos.

Onboard Swiss Air: Boston to Zurich (BOS - ZRH)

Airbus A330-300 Seat 12A

Boarding and Seat: Boarding started at around 9:45 PM, and I found my way to seat 12A, a single throne chair. The host, who was very pleasant and multilingual, greeted me warmly, even though I felt a bit out of place in my casual Palm Beach sweatshirt, shorts, and Birkenstocks, surrounded by business travelers in more formal attire. I was immediately served a glass of champagne to sip on while the rest of the passengers boarded. Any unfinished drinks were cleared away before takeoff at 10:15 PM. Shortly after, the attendant distributed menus and provided a hot hand rag.

Amenities: A crystal geyser water bottle, headphones, a pillow, a thick blanket, and an amenity bag were waiting in my seat. Although the outlet didn’t charge my phone during takeoff, power became available about 30 minutes later. The seat controls offered a mood light and buttons to adjust the softness/hardness, position, and even a massage option. I particularly enjoyed the lounge mode. While there was an entertainment system with movies and other options, I chose not to use it.

In-Flight Service: Dinner was served an hour into the flight. I opted for the chicken with mustard sauce, cauliflower, and potatoes, two bread rolls (which I dipped in the sauce), a salad, and grapes with cheese. I was too full to eat the potatoes. For dessert, I enjoyed a tiramisu.

Connectivity and Comfort: Although I purchased Wi-Fi for the entire flight, I didn’t use it much. After dinner, feeling exhausted, I put on the socks from the amenity bag, wrapped myself in the blanket, reclined the seat into a bed, and went to sleep.

Breakfast: The attendant had asked if I wanted to be woken up for breakfast if I was sleeping, but I woke up on my own about 30 minutes prior. For breakfast, I had a cappuccino, fruit yogurt, some fruit, a Danish, and a delicious smoothie.

Lavatories: The bathrooms were spacious and offered both hot and cold water options. The soap was spa-like, and face spray and lotion were available.

As we approached Zurich, I attempted to tip the flight attendant, who graciously declined, explaining that tips were prohibited. However, he later came by to thank me for the gesture, adding a personal touch to the already excellent service.

Layover in Zurich: Swiss Lounge Experience

Upon landing in Zurich, I initially went to the Swiss Lounge in Terminal D but was redirected to the one in Terminal A. In hindsight, I could have skipped the long line at customs if I had followed the crowd through. The lounge in Terminal A featured an automated check-in process, allowing me quick access by scanning my boarding pass.

I headed straight to the private bathrooms to freshen up—brushing my teeth, washing my face, and reapplying deodorant. I had just enough time for a quick cappuccino before making a dash for my connecting flight to Florence. Unlike the lounge at Logan, this one didn't make flight announcements, so keeping track of time was crucial.

Final Leg: Zurich to Florence

Helvetic Airways - LX1674 - Embraer 190 E2

The flight from Zurich to Florence was on a smaller aircraft; this time, I was in seat 7A. The business class seating configuration ensured I had an empty seat next to me, perfect for storing my bag. Although there was no Wi-Fi, my Apple Music was still working, which kept me entertained during the short two-hour flight.

After takeoff, the flight attendant offered me a beverage, and I chose a glass of Pinot Noir, accompanied by rosemary pretzel sticks. The attendant was attentive, quickly clearing away dishes and ensuring I had everything I needed. The flight ended on a charming note, with Italian music playing as we landed in Florence.
